Coblentz (lunar crater) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Coblentz is a small crater located on the Moon's far side. It's found south of a much larger crater called Bolyai.

What is Coblentz Crater?

Coblentz is a small, bowl-shaped dip on the Moon's surface. It's called a crater because it was formed when an asteroid or comet crashed into the Moon. This impact created a circular hole.

How Coblentz Crater Looks

The edge of Coblentz crater is mostly round, but it has been hit by many smaller space rocks over time. These impacts have worn down its rim, especially on the southern side, where there's a noticeable gap. The bottom of the crater is quite smooth and flat, with only a few very tiny craters inside it.

Coblentz's Neighbors

A raised area, like a small hill or ridge, curves from the northwest edge of Coblentz. This ridge connects Coblentz to the southern edge of the bigger Bolyai crater. Also, if you look just south and southwest of Coblentz, you can see some patches of darker material. These areas don't reflect much sunlight, which is why they look dark.
