The Coburn Gore–Woburn Border Crossing is a special place where the United States and Canada meet. It connects the small town of Woburn in Quebec with Coburn Gore in Maine. This crossing is where Quebec Route 161 and Maine State Route 27 come together. It's an important spot for people and goods traveling between the two countries.
The U.S. border station at Coburn Gore was built in 1931. It is so old and important that it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a significant historical site.
United States Border Station
The U.S. border station at Coburn Gore is one of the main ways to cross into Maine from Canada. It is the westernmost crossing in Maine. This station is located in Coburn Gore, which is a very rural area. It is part of a larger "unorganized area" in North Franklin, Maine. The closest town is Eustis, about 22 miles (35 km) away.
The station has several buildings. The main building is where officials check people and vehicles. It is made of wood and brick. It has a special covered area, called a porte-cochere, where cars can stop safely. This area protects people from the weather while they are being checked. Inside, the building is split into sections for immigration and customs. It still looks much like it did when it was first built.
Across the road from the main building are two houses. These houses were built for the officers who worked at the border station. They are simple, single-story homes.
The Coburn Gore station was built in 1931. This was during a time when the U.S. government wanted to make its borders more secure. They also wanted to create jobs during the Great Depression, a period when many people were out of work. At that time, there was a lot of illegal movement of goods across the border. More people were also using cars to travel, and new rules about who could enter the country were put in place. Because this location was so far from towns, the station included homes for the officers. The design of these buildings was similar to other border stations built around the same time. In 2014, this border station was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Canada Border Station
The Canadian side of this crossing is in a place called Woburn. Its full name is Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn. This community was started in 1880. For a long time, it was known for its wood processing industry.
The Canada border station in Woburn was built in 1950. Since then, it has been updated many times. These updates help it handle all the people and vehicles that cross the border every day.
