History of Eustis
Early Explorers and Settlers
In 1775, a famous American soldier named Benedict Arnold led his troops through this area. They were on a tough journey up the North Branch of the Dead River. Their goal was to reach Quebec and fight in the Battle of Quebec.
The first person to settle in Eustis was Caleb Stevens. He came from New Hampshire with his wife and nine children. This was around 1831.
How Eustis Got Its Name
Originally, the area was known as Township No. 1 of Range 4. Later, a man named Charles L. Eustis from Lewiston bought the northern part of the township. He built a sawmill and a gristmill there.
Because of Charles L. Eustis, the area became known as Eustis Plantation in 1857. Then, on February 18, 1871, with 342 people living there, it officially became a town.
