Cockedhat Mountain is a tall mountain in Alaska, a state in the U.S.. It stands about 7,410-foot (2,259 m) high. This makes it one of the tallest mountains in the middle part of the Brooks Range.

The mountain is found inside Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. This is a large area of protected wilderness. Cockedhat Mountain is about 27 air miles from the village of Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska.

Why the Name Cockedhat Mountain?

Cockedhat Mountain got its name because of its unique shape. From a distance, its outline looks a bit like a "cocked hat." This is a type of hat that was once popular, often worn with one side turned up.

What Does Cockedhat Mountain Look Like?

People who have visited Cockedhat Mountain describe it as having "high, jagged peaks." These peaks are often covered in clouds, making them look even more dramatic. The mountain also has "vast, sheer mountain walls." This means its sides are very steep and tall.

The very top of Cockedhat Mountain is where four long, steep ridges meet. These ridges are like natural pathways leading up to the summit.

Glaciers on Cockedhat Mountain

You can find special ice formations called cirque glaciers on Cockedhat Mountain. These are rare in the central Brooks Range. They sit in large, bowl-shaped areas on the north, east, and west sides of the mountain.

There is also a small "hanging glacier" on the steep western face. This type of glacier seems to cling to the side of the peak. Only the bowl on the mountain's southern side does not have snow and ice all year round.
