Cockle Bay is a small bay located in the heart of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. You can find it on the western side of Sydney's main city area, known as the CBD.

Cockle Bay is part of a bigger area called Darling Harbour. Darling Harbour then connects to the much larger Sydney Harbour. The whole area around the bay is also often called Darling Harbour. Today, Cockle Bay is famous for its lively waterfront spot, Cockle Bay Wharf. This area was designed by Eric Kuhne and has many restaurants, cafes, and places for events. It's a popular place for people to visit and have fun.

History of Cockle Bay

The story of Cockle Bay began a long time ago, in January 1788. This was when the First Fleet arrived in Sydney Cove. The First Fleet brought the first European settlers to Australia.

Finding a Place for Bricks

One of the ships, called the Scarborough, carried 5,000 bricks. It also had 12 wooden moulds for making more bricks. These first bricks helped the settlers start building. But they soon needed a good place to make many more bricks.

Making bricks needed two main things: lots of clay and fresh water. The settlers looked around the area. They found a perfect spot about a mile from their first settlement. This spot was at the end of a long cove. Because it was good for making bricks, it was first called "Brickfield Cove."

From Brickfield Cove to Cockle Bay

Over time, this area became known as Cockle Bay. Later still, it was renamed Darling Harbour. So, Cockle Bay has a long history, starting as a vital place for building the new colony.
