Coclesito's Beginnings
The town of Coclesito was officially started on August 8, 1970. This was done by a famous leader named Omar Torrijos Herrera. In 1971, he brought several water buffalo to Coclesito. These animals came all the way from Trinidad and Tobago. The idea was to create a special farm where everyone worked together. This type of farm is called an agricultural cooperative.
The Water Buffalo Cooperative
The water buffalo cooperative worked well for many years. It helped the people of Coclesito. But in 1990, the cooperative ended. The buffalo were then shared among the families who had worked on the farm. Today, the main way people make a living in Coclesito is through mining. Also, more and more people from Panama are visiting Coclesito for tourism.
What is Coclesito Like?
Omar Torrijos built a house in Coclesito in 1978. After he passed away, his house was turned into a museum. You can visit it to see his belongings and the original furniture. It's like stepping back in time!
Coclesito's Annual Festival
Since 2014, Coclesito has a special celebration every year. It's called the water buffalo festival. This festival happens on August 8. This date is important because it's the anniversary of when the town was founded. It's a fun way to remember the town's history and its connection to the water buffalo.
How to Get to Coclesito
Getting to Coclesito by road is quite an adventure! The only road that connects Coclesito to other places is a gravel road. It was built in 2006. This road goes from the mines, through Coclesito, and south to La Pintada.
The Old Airfield
Coclesito used to have an airfield. This was a place where small planes could land. However, this airfield is now closed. It was the place where the plane carrying Omar Torrijos was supposed to land. Sadly, that plane crashed nearby in 1981.
