Coddington is a small, quiet community in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a place where people live together but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or a village. Instead, it's part of the larger town of Buena Vista.

A Look Back: Coddington's Story

How Coddington Started

The area where Coddington is today began to be settled after some land was drained. This work was done by the Bradley Polytechnic Institute. This helped make the land more suitable for living.

In 1911, a man named Wallace Bell "Wallie" Coddington planned out a residential area. He called this new area "Pine Island." He chose this name because there was a group of tall pine trees on a higher piece of ground. These pines were surrounded by other trees like ash and birch in the lower, swampy areas.

From Pine Island to Coddington

The first homes in "Pine Island" were built around what are now Buena Vista Drive, O'Neill Lane, Coddington Road, and Lake Road. Later, when the community got its own post office, the name "Pine Island" was changed. It was renamed Coddington to honor its founder, Wallace Bell Coddington.

The Railroad and Today

Long ago, Coddington had a railroad station. Trains would pass through here on their way from Stevens Point to places further south. Today, the trains no longer stop here. Coddington is now a small group of homes. It is surrounded by the Buena Vista Marsh.
