Coenraadt "Coen" Moulijn (born February 15, 1937 – died January 4, 2011) was a very famous Dutch football player. He played for the club Feyenoord for many years, from 1955 to 1972. He was a key player when Feyenoord won the European Cup in 1970.
A Football Legend
Coen Moulijn was known as one of the best left wingers in Dutch football history. A "winger" is a player who plays on the side of the field, usually helping to attack and score goals. People often compared him to other great players like Stanley Matthews and Garrincha.
Even Johan Cruyff, another football legend, picked Coen for his all-time favorite Dutch team. Cruyff said that Coen had a special move: he would pretend to go one way, then quickly speed past his opponent on the other side. He was a truly gifted player.
What Others Said About Coen
Many people who played with or watched Coen Moulijn had amazing things to say about him:
- Hans Kraay, Sr., a tough defender, said Coen was unique. He played by instinct, like Lionel Messi. He could make defenders freeze, then race right past them. Kraay also joked that Coen looked more like an accountant than a football star!
- Rinus Israël thought Coen was a humble and hardworking person. He believed fans loved him for that. Rinus said that when Coen had the ball, it was like a special moment for everyone watching. He called Coen the best Feyenoord player ever.
- Wim Jansen believed Coen's pure football skills were as good as Johan Cruyff's. While Cruyff was a leader for the whole team, Coen was an amazing individual player.
Playing for Feyenoord
Coen Moulijn played as a left winger for the Rotterdam club Feyenoord. He was a star when the team won the European Cup in 1970. This is one of the biggest club football trophies in Europe. That same year, they also won the Intercontinental Cup. This cup was played between the best teams from Europe and South America.
Coen also played for the Netherlands national football team. He played in 38 international games and scored 4 goals for his country.
Personal Life
On July 28, 1961, Coen Moulijn married Lenie Waterreus.
Sadly, Coen became ill on New Year's Day in 2011 and passed away three days later.
When he was a child, Coen lived on the same street, Bloklandstraat, as his future Feyenoord teammate, Wim Jansen.
