Wim Jansen (born Wilhelmus Marinus Antonius Jansen; 28 October 1946 – 25 January 2022) was a famous Dutch football player and manager. He was known for his skills as a midfielder and defender.
Wim Jansen spent most of his playing career with the Dutch club Feyenoord. He helped them win many important titles, including the European Cup in 1970. He also played for the Dutch national team 65 times. He was part of the teams that reached the FIFA World Cup finals in 1974 and 1978.
After retiring as a player, Jansen became a successful manager. He led Feyenoord to win the KNVB Cup twice in the early 1990s. He also managed Celtic in Scotland, where he helped them win the Scottish Premier Division in 1997–98. This was a big achievement, as it stopped their rivals from winning a tenth title in a row.

Playing Career
Wim Jansen played most of his football career for his hometown club, Feyenoord, from 1965 to 1980. During his time there, he helped the team win four League Championships. They also won one Dutch Cup and the UEFA Cup in 1974.
One of his biggest achievements with Feyenoord was winning the European Cup in 1970. In the final, Feyenoord beat Celtic 2–1 in Milan. Jansen was also the captain of the Feyenoord team that won the UEFA Cup in 1974. They defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the final.
After leaving Feyenoord, Jansen played briefly for the Washington Diplomats in the United States. Then, he moved to Ajax, who were big rivals of Feyenoord. He won another league title with Ajax in 1981–82. His first game for Ajax was against his old club, Feyenoord.
A famous Dutch player, Johan Cruyff, thought very highly of Jansen. Cruyff said that Jansen was one of only four people whose opinions on football were truly worth listening to.
International Career
Wim Jansen played his first game for the Netherlands on 4 October 1967. He played a total of 65 games for his country. He scored his only international goal in 1968 against Luxembourg.
Jansen was a key player for the Dutch team in two FIFA World Cup finals. In 1974, the Netherlands finished second to hosts West Germany. In 1978, they were runners-up again, losing to hosts Argentina. He also played in the UEFA European Championship in 1976, where the Netherlands finished third.
Managerial Career
Jansen started his coaching career at his former club, Feyenoord. He worked as a coach and then as an assistant manager from 1983 to 1987. He also managed the Belgian club SC Lokeren for a season.
In 1991, he returned to Feyenoord as the main manager. He led them to win the KNVB Cup in 1991. This was a big surprise because the club had faced financial problems before that. The team won the cup again in 1992 and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1991–92.
After his time at Feyenoord, Jansen worked as an assistant manager for the Saudi Arabia team. He also managed the Japanese team Sanfrecce Hiroshima.
On 3 July 1997, Wim Jansen became the manager of Celtic in Scotland. He was the first manager from outside Great Britain and Ireland to lead the club. He guided Celtic to win their first Scottish league championship in ten years. This stopped their rivals, Rangers, from winning their tenth league title in a row. He also won the Scottish League Cup with Celtic in the same season. One of his most important decisions was signing the famous player Henrik Larsson.
Jansen later returned to Feyenoord in 2008 as an assistant coach. He resigned in 2009 when the head coach was fired.
Personal Life and Death
Wim Jansen grew up in Rotterdam, Netherlands. As a child, he lived on the same street as his future Feyenoord teammate Coen Moulijn.
He lived in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht from the 1970s. In late 2021, he released a book about his life called Meesterbrein ("Mastermind").
Wim Jansen passed away on 25 January 2022, at the age of 75, after an illness. His funeral was held at Feyenoord's stadium, De Kuip.
