What is Coetan Arthur?

Coetan Arthur is what's left of an ancient burial chamber. These types of structures are often called dolmens. A dolmen is usually made of large upright stones that support a huge flat stone on top. This particular site is thought to have been part of a larger "passage grave" with a round mound of earth, called a barrow.

An Ancient Burial Place

The structure you see today is a collapsed chamber. It once held the remains of people from the Stone Age. The biggest stone, called the capstone, is huge! It measures about 6 metres (20 feet) long and 2.5 metres (8 feet) wide. This massive stone is held up on one side by a single upright stone, called an orthostat. This orthostat is about 1.5 metres (5 feet) tall. Imagine how strong the people were who moved these stones!
