Cojímar is a lovely coastal town in Havana, Cuba. It is like a special neighborhood, or consejo popular, within the larger Habana del Este area. About 20,390 people live there.

A Place of Inspiration and Big Fish

Cojímar is famous for being a big inspiration for Ernest Hemingway. He was a very well-known writer. His 1952 novel, The Old Man and the Sea, was set in this very place. The story is about an old Cuban fisherman and a giant marlin.

This town is also known for a huge great white shark caught here in the 1940s. It was one of the biggest sharks ever reported! However, it's good to remember that old measurements might not be as exact as modern ones.

You can also find the Estadio Panamericano near Cojímar. This is a large sports stadium.
