Cokesbury is a small place in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a town or city with its own local government.

Cokesbury is part of a larger area. This area includes the city of Dunn. It is also connected to the even bigger Raleigh–Durham–Cary area.

The community got its name from two important Methodist church leaders. They were Thomas Coke and Francis Asbury. A place nearby, called the Buckhorn Iron Furnace, used to make iron. It was active during the Civil War until 1873.

History

Cokesbury was once known by a different name. Old maps from the 1800s and early 1900s show it was called Chalk Level. In 1889, about 65 people lived in Chalk Level.

The community had two churches. One was Cokesbury Methodist. The other was Cumberland Union Baptist. There were also three doctors living in Chalk Level.

Many different businesses helped the community. There were three general stores where people could buy everyday items. A fertilizer store sold supplies for farming. There was also a lumber seller and an auctioneer. Other businesses nearby included the Buckhorn Coal Mine. The Cape Fear Steel and Iron Mine was also close. Two flour mills and one woolen mill helped process goods.

Chalk Level had its own school. It was called the Cokesbury Academy. J.A. Cameron was the teacher there.

The name of the community changed over time. The first map to show the name Cokesbury was from 1916. This map was a soil map of Harnett County. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture made it.
