The Col. Charles Codman Estate is a really old and special house located on Bluff Point Drive in Barnstable, Massachusetts. It was built in 1870 and is a great example of a summer house from that time. It shows off two cool architectural styles: Queen Anne and Shingle style.
A famous architect from Boston, John Sturgis, designed the house. Later, in the early 1900s, some parts of the house were changed to add a different style called Colonial Revival. Because it's so important, the estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places in March 1987. It also became part of the Cotuit Historic District in November 1987.

The Codman Estate: A Historic Summer Home
The Codman House sits near the end of Bluff Point Drive. This road is a bit private and is just off Ocean View Drive in Cotuit. The house is on the south side of the road, close to where the road ends in a circle.
What Does It Look Like?
This large house has two and a half stories and is made of wood. It's shaped like the letter "L" and has a roof with both sloped (hipped) and pointed (gabled) sections. The outside is covered in wooden shingles.
The shorter part of the "L" shape sticks out from the front of the house. The main entrance is near the corner of the "L". The front of the house has five sections, and the two sections on the left on the first floor stick out a bit. They have a metal roof over them.
You'll also see dormers on the roof. These are windows that stick out from the roof and have their own small gabled roofs. Some of these dormers have been made bigger to create more space inside. A porch wraps around the eastern and southern sides of the house, and it even has a curved part.
Who Was Colonel Charles Codman?
The house was built in 1870 by Colonel Charles Codman. He was a veteran of the American Civil War, which was a big war in the United States. Colonel Codman had been spending his summers in the Cotuit area for about 20 years before he bought the land and built this house.
The house was designed by Boston architect John Sturgis. When it was first built, it had many details of the Queen Anne style. This included decorative wooden shingles and special dormer windows.
How the House Changed Over Time
A later owner of the house made some changes. They removed some of the original decorative features. They also added new things, like extending the dormer windows. These changes gave the house a more "Colonial Revival" look, which was a popular style that brought back ideas from earlier American architecture.
