What Does the House Look Like?
The Colonel James Loomis House stands in the middle of Windsor, right on the west side of the Broad Street Green. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of brick, with a pointed roof.
Front of the House
The front of the house, which faces the street, has three main sections. The front door is on the left side. Above the door, there's a cool, half-circle window that looks like a fan. The other windows are rectangular and have stone sills and special stone tops.
Above the main part of the house, the triangular section of the roof (called a gable) is fully decorated. It also has a half-circle fanlight window in its center. Over time, some modern parts have been added to the right side of the house. This was done carefully when the house was changed into a business space.
Who Was Colonel James Loomis?
This historic house was built in 1822 by James Loomis himself. At that time, he owned the only store in town, which was right next door to his new home.
The Loomis Family Legacy
James Loomis was a descendant of Joseph Loomis, who was one of the very first settlers in Windsor. The Loomis family was very important in the area. James Loomis's children later played a big part in starting The Loomis Chaffee School, a well-known school in Connecticut.
