Discover the Huntington House
The Colonel Joshua Huntington House stands in Norwichtown. This was one of the first places settled in Norwich. You can find it on the east side of Huntington Lane.
What Does It Look Like?
The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a unique roof style called a gambrel roof. There are two brick chimneys on top. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding.
The main front door has special decorations. It has columns on each side and a small window above it. There's also a triangular shape, like a small roof, above the door. The windows on the first floor have decorative tops. The windows on the upper floor are close to the roof's edge. You can also see two small windows sticking out from the front of the roof. These were probably added later, in the 1800s.
Who Was Joshua Huntington?
Joshua Huntington had this house built in 1771. He was the son of Jabez Huntington, who was a very successful businessman in Norwich. Young Joshua Huntington joined the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
He fought in important battles, like the Siege of Boston. He also took part in the 1776 New York and New Jersey campaign. After the war, he became a colonel in the Connecticut militia. This means he was a high-ranking officer in the state's military. Joshua Huntington was also active in politics. He served as a sheriff and helped choose the president. The house stayed in the Huntington family until 1823.
