Colaranea is a group of fascinating orb-weaver spiders. These spiders are special because they are only found in New Zealand. Scientists D. J. Court and Raymond Robert Forster first described them in 1988.
What Do Colaranea Spiders Look Like?
Colaranea spiders are quite colorful! They can be many different shades. You might see them in brown, red, or yellow. But they are most often a bright green. This helps them blend in with plants.
Where Do Colaranea Spiders Live?
These unique spiders live all over New Zealand. You can find them on both the North Island and the South Island. They are quite common in many areas.
Types of Colaranea Spiders
As of April 2019, there are four known types, or species, of Colaranea spiders. All of them live only in New Zealand:
- Colaranea brunnea Court & Forster, 1988 – Found in New Zealand
- Colaranea melanoviridis Court & Forster, 1988 – Found in New Zealand
- Colaranea verutum (Urquhart, 1887) – Found in New Zealand
- Colaranea viriditas (Urquhart, 1887) – Found in New Zealand
