Colberg Boat Works was a company that built ships in Stockton, California. It was located right on the Stockton Channel. The company was started in 1896 by three brothers: Wilton, Jack, and Gordon Colberg.

During World War II, Colberg Boat Works became very important. They built many different kinds of ships to help with the war effort. These included Minesweepers, Tugboats, and Submarine chasers. The shipyard kept building ships for many years until it closed down in the 1990s. The yard was at 848 West Fremont Street in Stockton. It was right next to another boat building company called Stephens Bros. Boat Builders.

The location was special because Stockton is an inland port. This means it's far from the ocean, but big ships can still reach it. The port is connected to the Pacific Ocean by the San Joaquin River and the Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel.

Ships Built by Colberg Boat Works

Colberg Boat Works built many different types of vessels over the years. They made everything from small fishing boats to large military ships. Here are some of the interesting ships they created:

Ships for World War II

During World War II, Colberg Boat Works played a big role. They built many ships for the US Navy and the US Army.

Minesweepers

Minesweepers are special ships designed to find and remove dangerous underwater mines. These mines could sink other ships. Colberg built many of these, including the Aggressive-class minesweeper and Agile-class minesweeper types. Some of these ships were lost during the war, like YMS 383, which sank in 1945. YMS 385 was lost after hitting a mine in 1944.

Tugboats and Rescue Ships

The company also built powerful tugboats. These boats are used to pull or push other ships. They also constructed rescue ships, like the USS Anchor and USS Protector. These ships were used to help other vessels in trouble.

Submarine Chasers

Submarine chasers were smaller warships. Their job was to hunt for enemy submarines. Colberg Boat Works built several of these for the US Navy.

Other Vessels Built

Besides military ships, Colberg Boat Works built many other kinds of boats for different purposes.

Ferries

They built several ferries, which are boats that carry people or vehicles across water. Examples include the Victory II and the Harbor King. Many of these ferries are still active today.

Fishing Vessels

The company also made many fishing boats. These boats helped people catch fish in the local waters. Some of these, like the Paolina T, are still in use today under new names.

Industrial and Patrol Vessels

Colberg built boats for industrial use, like barges and workboats. They also made patrol boats, such as the Albacore, which was used for fisheries patrol.
