The Coldwater Covered Bridge, also known as the Hughes Mill Covered Bridge, is a special wooden covered bridge in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. It crosses the water flowing out of Oxford Lake in the city of Oxford. You can find it at Oxford Lake Park, not far from Anniston.
This bridge was built around 1850 and is 63 feet (19 meters) long. It's quite unique because of its design, which uses a mix of Multiple King-post truss and Town Lattice styles. This means it has a special pattern of wooden beams that help it stay strong. The Coldwater Covered Bridge is the oldest covered bridge still standing in Alabama! The City of Oxford takes care of it.
History of the Coldwater Covered Bridge
The Coldwater Covered Bridge was first built around 1850. Some old records even suggest it might have been built as early as 1839. It was originally located over Coldwater Creek. This first spot was about 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of where it is now. Near its first home was Coldwater Mill, also known as Hughes Mill. This was a local mill that cut wood.
The bridge had a small fire on August 11, 1920, but it was fixed and stayed open for cars. In 1974, a new bridge made of concrete and steel replaced the old wooden one. The Coldwater Covered Bridge was then left alone for a while.
In 1990, the bridge was fully fixed up and moved to Oxford Lake Park. The original roof was made of tin, but it was replaced with a shingled roof during the restoration. Today, the Coldwater Covered Bridge is a popular place for tourists to visit in the Anniston area.
What is a Covered Bridge?
A covered bridge is a special type of bridge that has walls and a roof. These bridges are often made of wood. The roof and walls help protect the wooden parts of the bridge from rain, snow, and sun. This protection makes the bridge last much longer. Covered bridges were very common in the past, especially in the 1800s. They are sometimes called "kissing bridges" because they are dark and private inside!
