Early Life and Education
Colin Friels was born in Kilwinning, Scotland. His mother worked in a mill, and his father was a carpenter. When Colin was 11 years old, in 1963, his family moved to Australia. They first arrived in Darwin and then settled in Melbourne. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a bricklayer's helper. Later, he studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and finished his studies in 1976.
Acting Career
Colin Friels started his acting career mostly in theatre and on television. In 1980, he was a presenter on the Australian children's TV show Play School. His first movie role was in Prisoners (1981), but this movie was not released to the public.
His first movie that was released was Hoodwink (1981). In this film, he acted alongside Judy Davis, who later became his wife.
In 1986, Colin played the main character in the movie Malcolm. He played a shy genius who was good with machines. For this role, he won the 1986 AFI Award for Best Actor. He also won another AFI Award in 1995 for his role in the TV movie Halifax f.p. called Hard Corps. Colin has played many different kinds of characters. For example, he was a powerful business executive in the 1990 movie Darkman.
From 1996 to 1999, he played Frank Holloway in the TV series Water Rats. This role earned him a Logie Award in 1997 for Most Outstanding Actor.
Since 2003, Friels has been the main character in the BlackJack series of TV movies. In 2010, he also starred in Killing Time, where he played a well-known underworld figure named Lewis Moran. In 2018, he appeared in the TV miniseries Mystery Road with his wife, Judy Davis.
In 2021, Colin Friels played Jack Ramsay in the second season of the ABC series Total Control. He played a politician who was against an independent candidate.
Personal Life
Colin Friels has been married to actress Judy Davis since 1984. They have two children together.
In late 1997, Colin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He received successful treatment and is one of the few people to have a long-term recovery from this illness. Even during his treatment, he continued to work on the TV show Water Rats. Eventually, the effects of his treatment made it hard to work, so his character was written out of the show by going on a sailing trip. At the same time, he also continued to perform in plays, including Macbeth for the Sydney Theatre Company.

Colin Friels believes that actors can help people understand social and political issues. He has shown interest in important discussions about things like workplace rules and free trade. He has used his acting to highlight social issues. For example, in the movie Ground Zero, he played a cameraman looking into British nuclear testing in South Australia.
