Early Life and Learning

Coline Serreau was born in Paris, France. Her father, Jean-Marie Serreau, was a famous theatre director (someone who guides actors and crew in a play). Her mother, Geneviève Serreau, was an actress.

Growing up in Paris, Coline studied many things. She learned about literature, music, and theatre. She even became a trained organist and a trapeze artist!

Her first acting jobs were at the Comédie-Française, a famous French theatre. She also wrote many plays. Her first film as a director was Pourquoi pas! in 1977. It was a love story that became popular across Europe.

In 1985, she directed a comedy called Trois hommes et un couffin. This movie was a huge success in France. It was even remade in the United States as Three Men and a Baby.

Coline Serreau started her acting career in 1970. She performed at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier.

She wrote her very first movie script, called a screenplay, in 1973.

Her first documentary film was Mais qu'est-ce qu'elles veulent? (1978). A documentary film shows real events or people. This movie featured interviews with women from different backgrounds. Their honest stories surprised many people.

Her biggest hit movie was the comedy Three Men and a Cradle (Trois hommes et un couffin). This film came out in 1985. It was so successful that Coline won three César Awards in 1986. The César Awards are like the French Oscars. Her film was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the United States.

In 1986, Coline wrote her first play for the stage. It was called Lapin Lapin (Rabbit Rabbit). A director named Benno Besson helped bring it to life. Coline worked with Benno Besson on several plays over the years. These included Le théâtre de verdure (1987) and Quisaitout et Grobêta (1993).
