The Collectors Club, also known as the Collectors Club of New York, is a special club for people who love collecting stamps. It's located in New York City. This club started way back in 1896, making it one of the oldest stamp collecting groups in the United States.
The club's main goal is to help people learn more about stamp collecting, also called philately. They want to encourage this fun hobby. They also provide a friendly place for members to share their passion for stamps.
For many years, from 1939 until 2023, the club was in a building on East 35th Street in Manhattan. This building had a huge library with about 150,000 books about stamps. Scholars and stamp collectors could use these books for research. The building itself was quite old, built in 1901–02. It was even named a New York City landmark in 1979. The club sold this building in 2022.
The Collectors Club also publishes a magazine called The Collectors Club Philatelist. It has been published since 1922 and comes out every two months. This magazine features interesting articles about different topics in stamp collecting.
Club's New Home
In 2024, the Collectors Club moved to a new location. Their new home is on the mezzanine floor at 58 West 40th Street. This spot is right next to Bryant Park and close to the main New York Public Library. The club finished setting up their new space in the spring of 2024.
Who Are the Members?
The Collectors Club has more than 750 members. Many members live in the tri-state area around New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. However, people from all over the United States and other countries are also members.
Many famous stamp collectors have been part of this club. Some well-known members include Alfred F. Lichtenstein, Harry Lindquist, and John Luff. Even John Walter Scott, who created the famous Scott catalogue for stamps, was a member. Important people like Franklin D. Roosevelt, a former U.S. President, were also honorary members.
Special Awards
The club gives out a special award called the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Philately. This award started in 1952. It honors Alfred F. Lichtenstein and is given every year to a living person who has done amazing things for stamp collecting.
