Website The Collectors Club

The Collectors Club, also known as the Collectors Club of New York, is a special club for people who love collecting stamps. It is located in New York City. The club was started in 1896, making it one of the oldest stamp collecting clubs in the United States.

Its main goal is to help people learn more about stamp collecting. It also encourages the hobby and offers a friendly place for collectors. Members can enjoy their shared interest in a fun and educational way.

The club has a large library with about 150,000 books. These books are all about stamp collecting. Scholars, historians, and stamp collectors can use this library for their research. The club also publishes a magazine called The Collectors Club Philatelist. It has been published since 1922 and comes out every two months. The magazine features articles about different stamp collecting topics.

The Club's Home

The Collectors Club is currently located in a five-story building. It is a brownstone, which means it's made of brown stone. The building is at 22 East 35th Street in the Murray Hill area of Manhattan.

This building was originally a house built in 1901–02. It was designed by a famous architecture firm called McKim, Mead & White. The building mixes old American house styles with windows that look a bit like medieval castles.

The Collectors Club bought this building in 1937. It was named a New York City landmark in 1979. This means it is an important historical building.

The club is moving to a new location at 58 West 40th Street. This move is expected to be finished in Spring 2024.

Who Are the Members?

The Collectors Club has over 750 members. Many members come from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. However, people from other parts of the United States and even other countries are also members.

Many famous stamp collectors have been part of this club. Some well-known members include Alfred F. Lichtenstein and Theodore E. Steinway. Even former President Franklin D. Roosevelt was an honorary member.

Special Awards

The club gives out a special award called the Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award. This award started in 1952. It honors people who have done amazing things to help the hobby of stamp collecting. The award is given every year to a living person.
