College Hill is a neighborhood located in the city of Tampa, Florida, in the United States. In 2010, about 703 people lived here. This number mainly counted people in the Belmont Heights Estates area. The nearby Ponce de Leon Estates is also part of this neighborhood. The ZIP codes for College Hill are 33605 and 33610. This neighborhood is part of the East Tampa area. A newer community called Belmont Heights Estates was built in 2002. It replaced older homes in the area.
A Look Back: College Hill's History
The first records of this area date back to 1887. It was first known as A.F. Randall's College Hill Subdivision. For a long time, College Hill was outside of Tampa's city limits. Until 1927, it did not have basic services like water or sewer connections.
This area became a very important place for Black families in Tampa. Many homes were rented to Black residents. In 1927, Benjamin Mays, who led the Tampa Urban League, said that College Hill was almost the only place where Black people could buy land to build homes.
In the 1940s, large public housing projects were built here. These included College Hill Homes and Ponce de Leon Court. These buildings were later taken down in the early 2000s. New homes were built to improve the living conditions for residents.
Where is College Hill?
College Hill has clear boundaries that help people find it. To the south, it is bordered by 26th Avenue. To the north, you will find Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The eastern edge is 29th Street, and 15th Street forms the western boundary. This area is also the southern part of the Belmont Heights Neighborhood. Because of this, people often think of College Hill as part of Belmont Heights.
