Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The College of Guadalupe de Zacatecas was a special school for Catholic priests. It was founded by a group called the Order of Friars Minor (also known as Franciscans) in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico. This school, also called a seminary, was built between 1703 and 1707. Its main purpose was to train priests to work with Native peoples in the Spanish colonies, especially in an area called the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This region included parts of modern-day Mexico and the southwestern United States.

What Was the College of Guadalupe?

The College of Guadalupe de Zacatecas was a very important place for training missionaries. Missionaries are people who travel to new places to share their religious beliefs. The priests trained here were sent to help and teach the Native communities in the vast Spanish territories.

Why Was This College Important?

This college played a big role in the history of Spanish North America. It helped spread the Catholic faith and Spanish culture. The priests learned how to live and work in different environments, often far from big cities.

Missions Staffed by Zacatecas Priests

The College of Zacatecas sent its trained priests to many places. For example, they staffed nine of the thirty-eight Spanish missions in Spanish Texas. A mission was like a community center, often including a church, homes, and farms, where priests lived and worked with local people. They also staffed one mission in Spanish Louisiana. Additionally, they managed all six visitas (which were smaller country chapels) along the lower Rio Grande river. This shows how far their influence reached across the region.
