Early Days of Collins Island

In 1902, a man named James McFadden sold some land in Newport. He sold it to William S. Collins. Mr. Collins saw that Newport Bay could be a great place for vacations and fun. He wanted to build a resort there.

Collins then partnered with Henry E. Huntington. Huntington was a very important person at the time. He owned the Pacific Electric railway system. This railway helped people travel to new communities outside of Los Angeles. With Huntington's help, Collins could promote his new resort area.

Years later, in 1938, a famous actor named James Cagney bought Collins Island. He paid $32,000 for it.

During World War II, the United States Coast Guard used Collins Island. It was an important location for them. After the war, in 1948, James Cagney sold the island.

Collins Island remains a unique and interesting part of Newport Beach's history.
