History of La Cité College
The government of Ontario started many colleges in 1967. Some of these colleges, like Algonquin College in Ottawa, offered programs in French. But people soon thought about making a college just for French speakers.
In 1987, a group was asked to study this idea. They decided that a new French college was a great idea. In 1988, the government agreed to create a college that would teach only in French.
In 1989, the Canadian and Ontario governments made a plan. They would share the costs to build this new college. It was officially named "Collège d’arts appliqués et de technologie La Cité".
La Cité first opened its doors in September 1990. About 2,300 students started classes in temporary buildings in Ottawa. In 1993, the college bought land for a permanent campus. Construction began that same year. The main campus was ready for students in the 1995–1996 school year. This campus covers about 24 hectares (60 acres). It has eight buildings.
Over the years, more and more students have joined La Cité. The college also offers more and more types of training. In 2013, the college got a new logo and changed its name to just "La Cité".
Who Leads La Cité?
The first president of La Cité was Andrée Lortie. She led the college until 2010. After her, Lise Bourgeois became the new president. She used to be in charge of a large French school board.

In 2011, the 911 Institute opened on the main campus. This is a training center for emergency services. La Cité also has a smaller campus in Hawkesbury. This town is about 100 km from Ottawa. The college now offers some programs in Toronto too.
