Colombia is a special kind of town called a planned community. It was started in 1992 by the Mexican state of Nuevo León. You can find it in the Anáhuac Municipality.
This town is located on the southern side of the Río Grande river. Right across the river is the U.S. city of Laredo, Texas. In 2010, a count by INEGI showed that Colombia had 514 people living there.
History of Colombia
Colombia was created near the border between Nuevo León and Texas. The main reason for its founding was to help Nuevo León compete in the import and export business. This meant trading goods with the U.S. and other Mexican states like Coahuila and Tamaulipas.
Just one year after Colombia was founded, an important bridge opened. It's called the Colombia-Solidarity International Bridge. This bridge is one of the busiest crossings between the U.S. and Mexico.
The town of Colombia was named to honor Christopher Columbus. This was because it was founded 500 years after he first arrived in the Americas.
Future Plans
There are exciting plans for Colombia to grow even more:
- A new railroad bridge is being planned. It needs approval from the United States president.
- Another international road bridge is also being planned to help with traffic.
- An international airport for cargo (things being shipped) is in the early stages of planning.
