The Colombian black-handed titi monkey (Cheracebus medemi) is a small, furry monkey found only in Colombia. It's a type of New World monkey, meaning it lives in Central and South America. This special monkey was first described in 1963.

What Does the Colombian Black-Handed Titi Look Like?

Colombian black-handed titis are small primates. They have a fluffy body and a very long, bushy tail. Their tail is even longer than their body! However, they can't use their tail to grab things like some other monkeys do.

Most of their fur is black. Unlike some of their close relatives, their hands are also black. They have a small, round head. Around their throat, there's a white or yellow marking that looks like a collar. This collar goes all the way up to their ears.

Where Do These Titi Monkeys Live?

Colombian black-handed titis live only in the southern part of Colombia. You can find them in areas called Caquetá and Putumayo. Their home is in the tropical rainforests. These forests are warm and wet, with lots of tall trees.

How Do Colombian Black-Handed Titis Behave?

Scientists haven't studied the behavior of these monkeys very much. But we do know some interesting things about them!

They live in small family groups. These groups usually have a mom and a dad who stay together for their whole lives. They also live with their babies. Titi monkeys are very protective of their home area. If another titi monkey family comes too close, the resident pair will make loud sounds together. This tells the other monkeys to stay away!

What Do Colombian Black-Handed Titis Eat?

The main food for Colombian black-handed titis is fruit. They love to munch on different kinds of fruit found in the rainforest. Besides fruit, they also eat other parts of plants. Sometimes, they will also eat insects. This gives them a balanced diet to stay healthy and strong.
