Colomera is a small town located in the sunny province of Granada, Spain. In 2018, about 1,350 people lived here. The town's name probably comes from a Latin word meaning "pigeons' nest."

Discovering Colomera: Location and Landscape
Colomera is nestled on a hillside. It sits at the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains. A very old Roman bridge crosses the Colomera river below the town. This river flows south from a large dam, about three kilometers north of Colomera.
The town is also part of the GR 7 (Spain) walking route. This long path stretches across southeastern Spain. It goes all the way from Cadiz to the border of Andorra.
A Glimpse into Colomera's Past
Colomera has a rich history. It was freed from the control of the Moors in 1486. This happened during a period known as the Reconquista. The Reconquista was a long time when Christian kingdoms took back land in Spain.
The town is dominated by a large rock formation. This rock has old Arabic ruins on it. These ruins are even older than the town's main church.
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación
The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is a very important building in Colomera. Its construction began in 1530. The church was officially opened in 1560. The Archbishop of Granada led the ceremony.
This church looks very special. You can easily see it when you approach Colomera from the south. It is also visible from the old Roman road to the east.

The people of Colomera work in different ways. Farming is a big part of life here. They grow crops like almonds, olives, and citrus fruits.
There is also a local factory in Colomera. This factory makes textiles, which are fabrics and clothes. These textiles are used both in Spain and sent to other countries.
