The Story of Colonia Lapin
How Jewish Immigrants Started the Colony
Colonia Lapin was founded on November 6, 1919. It was started by Jewish immigrants who moved there. About 25 families came from another place called Colonia Esmeralda. They left their old home because of bad weather and not enough clean drinking water.
Mr. Eusebio Lapin helped these families. He was the Director of the Jewish Colonization Association. He listened to their problems and found a solution. He bought about 36 square miles (93 square kilometers) of land for them. This land was near Estación Rivera. In return, the families shared some of their crops with the person who owned the land before, Baron Maurice de Hirsch.
The colony was first named Phillippson No 3. But the first settlers wanted to honor Eusebio Lapin. So, they officially changed the name to "Colonia Lapin" to show their thanks.
Growing the Community
In 1921, more families arrived in Colonia Lapin. The community began to grow and become lively. When the colony was first set up, there were no shops or services.
But by 1921, the people needed more. They needed places for learning, social life, and worship. So, they built important buildings. These included a primary school and a Hebrew school. They also built a synagogue for religious services. An arts center, which also served as a theater and a library, was also created.
Colonia Lapin Today
Colonia Lapin still exists, but most of its original residents have moved away. Many of the small farms have been combined into larger ones. The old theater is still there. Also, a special monument has been built to remember the families who first founded the colony.
