What Was the Colony of Aden?
The Colony of Aden was a Crown colony. This means it was directly controlled by the British government. It was different from a "protectorate," which was a territory that had its own local rulers but was still protected and influenced by Britain. The land around the Colony of Aden was known as the Aden Protectorate.
How Did It Start?
Before 1937, Aden was part of British India. This meant it was managed by the British government in India. But a new law, called the Government of India Act 1935, changed things. This law made Aden a separate colony of the United Kingdom. This change officially happened on April 1, 1937.
The End of British Rule
The Colony of Aden did not last forever. On January 18, 1963, it became the State of Aden. This new state joined a group of other areas to form the Federation of South Arabia. This federation was a step towards independence.
Finally, on November 30, 1967, the federation became the People's Republic of South Yemen. This date marked the complete end of British rule in Aden.
