Colp is a small village in Williamson County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 168 people lived there.
History of Colp
Colp started as a village in the early 1900s. It was named after a man named John Colp. His company opened a coal mine in the area in 1901. A railroad line was built to the mine in 1904. This helped transport the coal.
The village officially became a town in 1915. Many people from Eastern Europe, like the Rusyns, moved to Colp to work in the mines.
One of Colp's mayors, Frank Caliper, was a very important leader. He served as mayor for 52 years! He was mayor from 1935 until he passed away in 1987. This makes him one of the longest-serving elected officials in Illinois.
Coal Mining in Colp
Coal mining was a big part of Colp's history. Several companies opened coal mines in the village. These mines provided many jobs for the people living there.
