History of Colquitt
The area where Colquitt is located was first settled in the 1880s. It quickly became an important place for local farmers. They used it as a "shipping point" to send their crops to other places.
How Colquitt Got Its Name
The community was named after the family of Oscar Branch Colquitt. His family was among the very first people to settle in this area. Oscar Branch Colquitt later became a governor of Texas.
Early Community Life
In its early days, Colquitt was a busy little place. It had a cotton gin, which was a machine used to separate cotton fibers from their seeds. There was also a general store and several homes.
Population Changes Over Time
Between 1910 and the 1930s, more than 100 people lived in Colquitt. However, the population later decreased to about 25 people. By 1990, Colquitt was still shown on county maps.

Colquitt is found in the north-central part of Kaufman County. It is situated on a special side track of a railroad line. This location is about two miles south of the Rockwall County border. You can find it near Farm to Market Road 548.
