How Colton Began
Colton started in 1897 with a creamery, a place where milk products are made. J. E. Colton built this creamery. Soon, other businesses grew around it, forming a main street.
In 1901, J. E. Colton started a newspaper called "The Colton Courier." This newspaper was published for many years. A railroad was built through Colton between 1905 and 1906. It used to carry passengers. J. E. Colton passed away in 1910 when he was 53 years old.
The Story of Colton's Schools
The very first school in Colton was built in 1879 by J. E. Colton. It was a simple one-room schoolhouse. From 1903 to 1905, a bigger school was built to replace the old one. This new school started teaching high school subjects.
In 1907, a separate high school was built. It was designed for students to attend for two years. However, it only lasted two years and closed in 1909. A new four-year high school opened in 1913 with six teachers. This school lasted much longer.
Near the end of 1924, a new brick school building was constructed. It followed the same teaching system as the previous school. This school was used until 1967. That year, the Tri-Valley school was built, bringing together students from several small towns.
