Columbia is a small, unincorporated community. It is located in the town of Hewett. This community is part of Clark County, Wisconsin, in the United States. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or village.

What is the History of Columbia?

Columbia got its name from a famous song. The song is called "Hail, Columbia."

Early Days and the Post Office

A post office opened in Columbia in 1894. It helped people send and receive mail. This post office stayed open for many years. It finally closed down in 1920.

Columbia in 1918

In 1918, a book called History of Clark County described Columbia. It said Columbia was a station on the Omaha railway line. This line ran between Neillsville and Merrillan.

The community had a nice school building. There were also several pleasant homes. Years before, a land company tried to promote Columbia. This effort was a bit too much. Because of this, the area faced some challenges for a while.

However, Columbia eventually grew. By 1918, it had important places. These included a store and a warehouse. There was also a cheese factory. The community had a hall and a church too.
