Where Columbia Brome Grows
Columbia brome naturally grows in western North America. You can find it from British Columbia in Canada, all the way down to California in the United States, and even as far east as Wyoming. This grass likes to grow in many different places, including cool, wet forests with cone-bearing trees, known as temperate coniferous forests.
What Columbia Brome Looks Like
This grass is a perennial, which means it lives for more than two years. It can grow quite tall, reaching up to 1.1 meters (about 3.6 feet) in height.
Flowers and Seeds
The flowers and seeds of Columbia brome grow in a loose, open cluster called an inflorescence. Imagine a bunch of tiny flowers on stalks. The lower parts of this cluster often hang down or nod gently.
The small parts that hold the seeds are called spikelets. These spikelets are flat and have thin, bristle-like parts called awns. Each awn can be up to a centimeter (about 0.4 inches) long and grows from the tip of the seeds.
Food for Animals
Columbia brome is considered a good source of food for animals. Both farm animals, like cows and sheep (which are called livestock), and wild animals that eat grass, like deer, enjoy grazing on this plant.
