The Columbian windflower (Anemonastrum deltoideum) is a beautiful flowering plant. It is also known as the western white anemone. This plant belongs to the Ranunculaceae family, which is also called the buttercup family. You can find it growing naturally in the forests along the west coast of the United States.

What is the Columbian Windflower?

The Columbian windflower is a type of perennial plant. This means it lives for many years. It grows from special underground stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes help the plant spread and come back each year.

What Does it Look Like?

This plant usually grows to be about 10 to 30 centimeters tall. That's roughly the height of a ruler!

Its Leaves

Most Columbian windflowers have one main leaf at the bottom. This leaf is divided into three large parts, called leaflets. Each leaflet can be up to 6 centimeters long and has a jagged, toothed edge. Sometimes, there are more leaves along the stem that look similar to these basal leaflets.

Its Flowers Up Close

Each plant usually has one flower on its stalk. The flower doesn't have true petals. Instead, it has five white, petal-like parts called sepals. Each sepal is about one to two centimeters long. Inside the flower, you'll see many whiskery stamens, which produce pollen. There are also many pistils, which are the parts that will develop into seeds.

Its Fruit

After the flower blooms, it produces fruit. The fruit is a cluster of small, round, dry seeds called achenes.

Where Does it Grow?

The Columbian windflower loves to live in the forests of the western United States. You can find it in states like California, Oregon, and Washington. It prefers the shady, moist conditions found under the trees.
