Company History
How It Started
Two Italian immigrants, Peter Domenici and Enrico Parducci, started the company in 1917. It was first called the San Francisco Sausage Company. In 1967, the company moved its production to South San Francisco. They began selling deli meats in 1974. Albert Piccetti was the company's president for 40 years. He passed away in 1998.
Changes and Growth
Columbus Salame worked with a design studio to update their company logo. They wanted to show off their Italian roots. This included using a special type of lettering called Bodoni.
In 2009, there was an incident at their South San Francisco factory. A small amount of a chemical called anhydrous ammonia leaked. The company later paid money and agreed to make safety improvements. This was to settle a legal case.
In 2011, Columbus Craft Meats opened a new factory in Hayward. This new facility cost $31 million to build. It replaced their old factory in South San Francisco, which had been damaged by a fire.
New Ownership
Over the years, the company's ownership changed a few times. In 2006, a company called Endeavor Capital took control. Then, in 2012, another company named Arbor Investments bought it. On November 27, 2017, Hormel Foods, a large food company, bought Columbus Craft Meats for $850 million.
People Behind the Products
John Piccetti was a co-owner of Columbus Craft Meats. He helped write a cookbook called Salumi: Savory Recipes and Serving Ideas for Salame, Prosciutto, and More. He worked with other food experts on this book.
