Column (tree) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Column tree, sometimes called Near Pershing, is a truly massive giant sequoia. It grows in the Giant Forest Grove inside Sequoia National Park in California. Two nature experts, Wendell D. Flint and Michael M. Law, gave it the name "Column." They chose this name because the tree looks very straight and tall, like a giant column. This amazing tree is one of the largest giant sequoias on Earth. It ranks as the 15th biggest in the world.

What Makes Column Special?

The Column tree stands out for a few reasons. It is located about 350 ft (110 m) west-southwest of another famous tree, General Pershing. If you visit, you might notice a large burn mark on its north side. This mark looks like a triangle. Also, the very top of the tree has two branches that stick up like horns. These unique features help people identify the Column tree.
