What does it look like?

This frog is quite small. Adult frogs usually grow to be about 2.5 to 3.3 centimeters (about 1 to 1.3 inches) long. Female frogs are typically a bit bigger than the males.

The Chinese tree frog has a wide head. Its back is a dark green color, which helps it blend in with leaves. Its belly is yellow, and its mouth is brown. It also has a black stripe that runs near each eye and black spots on its sides.

Where does the Common Chinese tree frog live?

These frogs are native to Southeastern and eastern China and Taiwan. They can be found at elevations between 200 and 1,000 meters above sea level. Their habitat includes forests, shrubs, agricultural landscapes (rice fields, ponds, corn bushes), wetlands, and urban gardens.

Behavior

These frogs spend their time in trees, on smaller plants, and sometimes in rice fields. They often gather in groups.

Taxonomy

Scientists believe this frog is closely related to the European tree frog (Hyla arborea). This means they share a common ancestor and have similar characteristics.

What's on the menu?

The Common Chinese Tree Frog is a skilled, sit-and-wait predator that uses its excellent vision and sticky, projectile tongue to catch prey.

Its diet consists mainly of:

  • Crickets and Grasshoppers
  • Moths and Flies
  • Beetles
  • Spiders
  • Ants and other small invertebrates.
  • Earthworms and Snails.

A simple food chain

Algae/Plants (base) → Insects & Invertebrates (primary consumers) → Common Chinese Tree Frog (secondary consumer) → Snakes, Birds, Mammals (tertiary consumers)

Predators

Their main predators are snakes (vine snakes, rat snakes, among others), birds (herons, kingfishers, hawks, and owls), other frogs, and mammals such as raccoons, civets, weasels, mongooses, and domestic cats.

While adults are terrestrial, their eggs and tadpoles are eaten by fish, aquatic insects, dragonfly larvae, and even other tadpoles.

Adaptations

As tree frogs, they are excellent climbers. They possess long, slender limbs with adhesive toe pads that enable them to grip and climb vertical surfaces like leaves and tree bark with ease.

Although they live in trees, they are never far from water. They are typically found near the edges of ponds, streams, and rice paddies, which provide essential breeding sites.

Importance

The Common Chinese Tree Frog plays a vital dual as a predator, helping to control populations of insects and other invertebrates.

As prey, it transfers energy from the abundant insect world to larger predators, supporting the health and stability of the entire food web. Its presence is often an indicator of a healthy environment.
