The common Mexican tree frog (Smilisca baudinii) is a type of tree frog that is active at night. Its natural home stretches from the Sonoran Desert and the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas, all the way south to Costa Rica.

People also call this frog the Mexican tree frog, Baudin's tree frog, or Van Vliet's frog. You can usually find them in areas with light forests, close to places where water is always available, like ponds or streams.

The common Mexican tree frog is usually a brownish-gray color. It has darker brown spots and patterns that are not regular. Its belly is typically a lighter gray or white. A cool thing about this frog is that its legs have clear, dark bands, almost like stripes!

Why Is It Called So Many Names?

This frog has been given many different scientific names over time. This happened because groups of these frogs live far apart from each other. When scientists found them in different places, they sometimes thought they were discovering a new kind of frog by mistake!

Protecting the Mexican Tree Frog

The common Mexican tree frog is considered a threatened species in the state of Texas in the United States. This means there are worries about its future. It has only been seen in a few areas there. Scientists haven't yet counted how many of these frogs are left in the wild. This makes it hard to know exactly how much help they need.
