Compuertas Borough, Baja California facts for kids
Compuertas was once a special area, like a neighborhood, within the city of Mexicali. It is located in the northwest part of Baja California, a state in Mexico.
Where is Compuertas?
Compuertas is found in the northeastern part of Mexicali. It's right next to Calexico, California, which is a town in the United States. This means Compuertas is very close to the border between Mexico and the U.S.
To the west of Compuertas is downtown Mexicali. To the east, you'll find the area called Hechicera. And to the south is another area known as González Ortega.
Compuertas is also home to one of the important border crossings, called a "Port of Entry." This one is at East Calexico, California. It's one of three main crossings in the Imperial Valley region. Another crossing is about 10 kilometers (about 6 miles) to the west, in downtown Calexico. The third is about 60 kilometers (about 37 miles) to the east, near Andrade, California and Los Algodones, Baja California. These ports of entry are like gates where people and goods can cross between the two countries.
How Compuertas Grew
Before it became a part of the main city, Compuertas had a few small communities. These areas were mostly home to families with average incomes.
A big change happened when a new border crossing, called "Garita Nuevo Mexicali," opened. This new crossing brought many new roads and wider streets (boulevards) to the area. Because of these improvements, Compuertas started to become a very popular and fancy place to live. It became known as Mexicali's "Golden Residential Zone." More families with higher incomes began to move there. Today, many of the city's private neighborhoods, which are special communities often with their own security, are located in this zone.
