Concón is a city and a commune in Chile. It is located in the Valparaíso Region of Chile. Concón is a very popular place for tourists. People love to visit for its beautiful beaches, fun balnearios (beachside resorts), and lively night life.

Geography of Concón

Concón covers an area of about 76 square kilometers. It is located right on the Pacific coast. You can find it north of Reñaca and Viña del Mar, and south of Quintero. The Aconcagua River flows into the ocean at the northern part of the town.

Concón's Beaches and Dunes

Concón has three main beaches that people enjoy: Playa Negra, Playa Amarilla, and Playa Boca. There are also large sand dunes along the coast. These dunes cover about 50 hectares. However, only about 20 hectares are protected. The rest of the dunes are slowly being covered by tall apartment buildings.

People of Concón

According to a census taken in 2002, Concón had 32,273 people living there. Most of these people (about 97.8%) lived in the city areas. Only a small number (2.2%) lived in the countryside. At that time, there were slightly more women (16,560) than men (15,713).

How Concón's Population Grew

Concón has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Chile. Between 1992 and 2002, its population grew by 71%. By 2010, the city had more than 50,000 people. If you are from Concón, you are called a Conconino (if you are a boy or man) or a Conconina (if you are a girl or woman).

History of Concón

The area where Concón is located was first mentioned a very long time ago, in 1541. This was by Pedro de Valdivia, a Spanish conqueror. Concón officially became its own town, or municipality, in 1899. However, it later became part of the nearby city of Viña del Mar in 1927. But in 1995, a new law made Concón its own municipality again.

How Concón is Governed

As a commune, Concón is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by a person called an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The mayor is chosen directly by the people who live in Concón. The current mayor is Oscar Sumonte González.

Concón's Role in National Elections

Concón is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, when people vote for members of the Chamber of Deputies, Concón is part of the 14th electoral district. When they vote for the Senate, Concón is part of the 6th senatorial area.
