Conchobar Ua Briain (died 1142) was an important ruler in Ireland during the middle of the 12th century. He was a king who controlled the areas known as Munster and Dublin.

Who Was Conchobar Ua Briain?

Conchobar Ua Briain was the son of Diarmait Ua Briain, who was also a King of Munster. Being a king meant he was a powerful leader in charge of a kingdom. He lived at a time when different Irish kingdoms often fought for control.

Becoming a King

Conchobar first became the King of Munster in 1138. This was a big step in his journey to power. Later, in 1141, he also became the King of Dublin. This information comes from old Irish records called the Annals of the Four Masters. Sadly, he died the very next year, in 1142.

Building Cahir Castle

Conchobar Ua Briain is also famous for something else. Many people believe he started building what is now Cahir Castle in the early 12th century. This castle was a very strong and modern fortress for its time. It was designed to be a great defensive stronghold.

The castle was used for hundreds of years after it was built. In 1375, it was given to the Butler family by King Edward III of England. Cahir Castle is still an amazing historical site today.
