The Confederate Memorial Gates in Mayfield are special historical monuments. You can find them at the entrances to Maplewood Cemetery in Mayfield, Kentucky. These gates were built to remember people from Graves County who served during the American Civil War.

The gates were the second monument in Mayfield created by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. This group works to preserve the memory of the Confederacy. The gates were chosen because they were not too expensive. They were also meant to help improve the city.

Exploring the Memorial Gates

The monuments are made up of three sets of gateposts. There are six posts in total. They are made from stuccoed concrete.

Main Entrance Gates

The main gates are the first ones you see. When they are closed, they show the words "The United Daughters of the Confederacy Memorial". These main posts have special bronze plaques. Each post is two feet wide and ten feet tall. There is 27 feet of space between them.

Center and Third Gates

The next set of gates is called the center pair. These posts are three feet wide and ten feet tall. They are about 285 feet away from the main gates. There is no road between them.

The third set of gates is even further away. They are 330 feet from the center gates. These posts are two feet wide and ten feet tall.

A Place in History: National Register of Historic Places

The Confederate Memorial Gates are important enough to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places that are important to American history. The gates were added to this list on July 17, 1997.

Why Are They on the List?

These gates are one of 61 different monuments in Kentucky related to the American Civil War. They are part of a larger group of monuments called the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky.

Another monument in Mayfield, the Confederate Memorial in Mayfield, is also on this list. It is located in downtown Mayfield. The only other monument in Graves County on the list is the Camp Beauregard Memorial in Water Valley.

Inside Maplewood Cemetery, you can also find the Wooldridge Monuments. These are also on the National Register. The only other gateway like this on the list is the Confederate Memorial Gateway in Hickman.
