The Confederate Memorial Gateway in Hickman, Kentucky is a special entrance found in the city's cemetery. It was built in 1913 with money from a group called the Private Robert Tyler Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. This historic gateway was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, recognizing its importance.

Hickman's Civil War Story

Hickman is located right on the Mississippi River. This made it a very important spot during the American Civil War. Both sides, the Union and the Confederacy, wanted control of the city.

Hickman was mostly on the side of the Confederacy during the war. However, the Confederates lost control of the area in 1862. After that, Confederate cavalry (soldiers on horseback) would sometimes raid the town.

About the Memorial Gateway

The Memorial Gateway was designed by a famous artist named Sir Moses Ezekiel. It was built by the McNeal Marble Company from Marietta, Georgia. It took ten years to build this large granite structure. The cost was about $10,000, which was a lot of money back in 1913!

The back of the gateway is made of solid granite. The front has many decorations. The names of seventy Confederate soldiers are carved into the stone. The gateway has a large opening in the middle for vehicles. There are also two smaller openings on the sides for people walking.

The top of the gateway has a special message carved into it. It says: "1861 Our Heroes 1865". Even though it's in a cemetery, this gateway was built to honor the Confederate soldiers and remember their service. It was a way to celebrate their history long after the war ended.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

On July 17, 1997, the Confederate Memorial Gateway was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States. It was one of 61 different monuments in Kentucky related to the American Civil War.

These monuments were all added as part of a larger group called the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky. Another gateway on this list is the Confederate Memorial Gates in Mayfield. There is also another monument in Fulton County, about 20 miles east in Fulton, Kentucky. That one is called the Confederate Memorial in Fulton.
