The Confederate Monument in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky is a tall stone statue. It stands about 8 feet (2.4 meters) high. The monument was built in 1894. It was created by a group called the Kentucky Women's Monumental Association. This group later became part of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The local government of Lawrenceburg now takes care of the monument.

The monument shows a Confederate soldier. He is wearing a winter coat. He holds a rifle straight up in front of him. Around the bottom part of the monument, you can see names. These are the names of Confederate army groups from Anderson County. There is also a list of soldiers who were hurt or died during the war.

Lawrenceburg and the Civil War

Lawrenceburg saw some fighting during the American Civil War. Two small battles happened there. These were the Battle of Lawrenceburg and the Battle of Dog Walk. They took place just before the big Battle of Perryville in October 1862.

On October 6, 1862, Union soldiers fought Confederate cavalry. The Union Ninth Kentucky Cavalry fought against Confederate cavalry led by Colonel Scott. Confederate troops also marched through Lawrenceburg. These troops later took control of Frankfort, Kentucky's capital. Later in the war, there was some unofficial fighting in the area. This led to the creation of a Union Home Guard unit in the town. This local group helped protect the town.

Why Was the Monument Built?

The Kentucky Women's Monumental Association built this monument. This group was formed to honor soldiers who fought for the Southern cause. They wanted to remember the many people who had died during the war.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) was formed in 1894. The Kentucky Women's Monumental Association joined this larger group. The UDC is known for helping to build many monuments. They are directly linked to 15 monuments now listed on the U.S. National Register.

Recognized as a Historic Place

On July 17, 1997, the Lawrenceburg Confederate Monument became a historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important places in American history. The monument was one of sixty different monuments from the Civil War in Kentucky to be added. It is part of a special group called the Civil War Monuments of Kentucky. This monument is one of ten soldier monuments on a courthouse lawn in this group.
