Conrad II of Salzwedel (died September 20, 1241) was an important German nobleman. He was a Roman Catholic priest. He also served as the bishop of Cammin from 1233 until his death. He was known as Conrad III during his time as bishop.

Life as a Bishop

Conrad II of Salzwedel was the son of Frederick II of Salzwedel, who was a "Vogt." A Vogt was like a local governor or administrator. In 1211, Conrad became a "canon" in Magdeburg. A canon is a type of priest who is part of a cathedral's group of clergy.

When the previous Bishop of Cammin, Conrad II, passed away in 1233, Conrad II of Salzwedel was chosen to take his place. His brother, Jaczo I, who was a Count (a high-ranking noble), helped him get elected. This election showed that the region of Brandenburg was becoming more powerful in Pomerania. The Pope officially approved his election later that year, and he became Bishop Conrad III.

Challenges and Land Deals

Early in his time as bishop, Conrad faced a disagreement over land. There was a border dispute between Pomerania and Mecklenburg about a region called Circipania. The Bishopric of Schwerin tried to take this land from the Bishopric of Cammin. However, Conrad III successfully kept Circipania for Cammin.

Even though he kept Circipania, he did lose some land in the east. This territory went to the Archbishopric of Gniezno.

In 1240, Conrad received the town of Stargard from Duke Barnim I of Pomerania. A Duke is a very high-ranking noble, often a ruler of a large area. In return, Conrad gave Duke Barnim I the right to collect "tithes" from 1800 farms. A tithe was a payment, usually one-tenth of a person's income or crops, given to the church. These farms were located in the Uckermark area, near Stargard and Pyrzyce.

Conrad III died on September 20, 1241. After his death, there was a period without a bishop in Cammin. This "interregnum" (a time when a normal ruler is absent) lasted until 1244.
