Uckermark is a special kind of area in Germany called a Kreis, which means "district." You can find it in the northeastern part of Brandenburg, one of Germany's states. This district is super big! In fact, it has the largest land area of any district in Germany.
The Uckermark district we know today was created in 1993. It was formed by joining several older districts: Angermünde, Prenzlau, and Templin. The city of Schwedt also became part of it.
What Does the Uckermark Coat of Arms Mean?
The coat of arms for Uckermark tells a story about its history and land.
The most important parts of the coat of arms are the brick buildings. These represent the churches in the towns of Prenzlau and Angermünde. Below the churches, you can see a city wall. This wall reminds us of the many wars that happened here a long time ago, in medieval times.
The church tower has two round windows and three gothic windows. The two round windows show how the area was divided into two districts before a big change in 1817. The three gothic windows represent how it was divided after that change. On the city wall, there are two shields. One shield has a griffin, which is a mythical creature. This griffin represents the region of Pomerania. The other shield has an eagle, which is a symbol for Brandenburg. In the top part of the coat of arms, you can see wavy lines. These lines stand for the main rivers that flow through the district, like the Oder, Randow, and Ucker rivers. The yellow color in the background is very important. It shows how much farming happens in Uckermark. This area was once known as the "granary" of Brandenburg because it grew so much food. A person named Hans Benthin created this coat of arms. It was officially approved on November 8, 1995. |
