Constance Goddard DuBois was an American writer and a special kind of researcher called an ethnographer. She wrote a lot about the Native American people and their cultures in southern California between 1899 and 1908. She passed away in 1934.

Constance DuBois was born in Zanesville, Ohio. Later, in 1889, she moved to Waterbury, Connecticut. She wrote many stories and six novels during her life.

Her most important work was as an ethnographer. This means she studied different cultures and their ways of life. She taught herself how to do this research. She started her studies when anthropology, the study of human societies and cultures, was just becoming a real field in the United States.

Exploring California's Native Cultures

In the late 1890s, Constance DuBois started taking summer trips to California. She visited her sister who lived near San Diego. During these visits, she explored the areas outside the city.

Meeting Native American Communities

She met with the remaining communities of Diegueño and Luiseño Native Americans. She learned about their traditional ways of life. She also studied how they lived in modern times.

Supporting Native Crafts and People

Constance DuBois helped promote their traditional crafts, especially basket weaving. She also offered financial and political help to these communities. She truly cared about preserving their culture and supporting their people.

Constance DuBois wrote many articles and one very detailed book about the Native American people she studied.

Key Publications

Her longest and most famous work was "The Religion of the Luiseño Indians of Southern California." This book was published in 1908. She also wrote 23 shorter articles. These articles focused on their myths, ceremonies, and crafts.
