Contorno is a special area called a barrio in the town of Toa Alta, Puerto Rico. Think of a barrio like a neighborhood or a district within a larger town. In 2010, about 4,737 people lived in Contorno.

History of Contorno

Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the U.S. government took a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that 653 people lived in the Contorno barrio at that time.

Population Changes Over Time

The number of people living in Contorno has changed a lot over the years. In 1900, there were 653 residents. The population grew steadily for many years, reaching 1,630 people by 1940.

After 1950, the population saw some ups and downs. By 1980, it had grown to 4,896 people. The highest population recorded was 5,254 in 1990. In 2010, the population was 4,737.
